Why does Chai tea taste best at night, by the fire, while watching Netflix? But, most traditional Chai teas contain black tea, which is delicious but it tends to keep me up at night. – Ok, I’ll be honest… Netflix is what keeps me up late! I’ve come up with a super yummy Caffeine Free Chai Tea Spice Blend that has all the taste of traditional chai spices but no caffeine to keep you up. Add this Chai Spice Blend to muffins, cookies or oatmeal for a nice warm pick me up.
For a small batch, you can work these spices with a mortar and pestle or do as I do and bring out the big guns – my Vitamix. In fact, I make this herbal tea blend in a big batch and keep it in a Mason jar in the tea cupboard. But, I often find myself adding it to other recipes as well, sprinkle a little in your oatmeal next time, it’s amazing!
Caffeine Free Chai Tea Spice Blend Recipe:
20 cardamom pods
16 peppercorns
12 bits of star anise
1 tbsp fennel seeds
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cloves
Ok, so measure out your spices and pop them in the blender or Vitamix and blend until all ingredients are blended to a reasonably fine powder. Transfer to a mason jar and seal with an airtight lid.
For a caffeine-free herbal spice tea, steep 1-2 tsp of Chai Spice Blend for 5-10 minutes in 1-2 cups hot water and strain before serving.
For a richer tea flavour, steep 1-2 tsp of Chai Spice Blend with 2 tsp of caffeine-free red tea such as Honey Bush or Red Rooibos, steep for 5-7 minutes strain before serving with milk and honey.
Or if you need a pick-me-up combine 1-2 tsp of Chai Spice Blend with 1 tsp of Black Tea and 2 cups water, simmer on low for 3-5 minutes stir in milk and honey to taste and strain before serving.
For a spicier sweet treat see my Chilli Hot Chocolate Recipe. If you prefer herbal tea see my recipes here: Herbal Tea
So, there you have it one tea 3 ways. I hope you enjoy my version of this Caffeine-Free Chai Spice Blend. Feel free to let me know how yours turns out in the comments below.

Thank you, Mary Jane!
Enjoy,

I love the combo of spices in your Chi Recipe. It reminds me of an oven baked recipe I tasted that came from an Ashram in India. It was wonderful and smooth but kept me up all night at the retreat. I live in Oregon and the damp winter chill is on us. Made a big mug of your Chi before I went to take care of some paperwork. It is helping my motivation and warming me from inside.
Awe Kim,
I am so glad you enjoyed my recipe, it was definitely inspired by traditional Indian Chai recipes that I have tried over the years. Thanks for reaching out
Take care,
Jana
